Communication
Communication skills go a long way, no matter the profession. Being able to effectivley communicate keeps everyone on the same page when it comes to expectaions, deadlines, project requirements etc. Every industry benefits from team memebers, employees, and even managements ability to articulate and collaborate well. Communication is a two way street that involves clear, confident speaking as well as intentional listening.
Collaboration
Software developement is one of the most important team sports in our time, responsible for shaping the very world we live in. Even when working alone, we still have to communicate with designers, project managers, customers, and more. But working on a team is more than merely submitting work to a repository. It means relying on several other skills — like time management, communication, and empathy — so your whole team can move like a well-oiled machine.
Time Management
Another critical skill to have, especially in software developement. Being able to give an accurate timeline can be crucial when dealing with stakeholders on either end of a project. When reporting to project managers, business managers or other officiating associates it is our responsibilty to deliver a satisfactory product to clients in a timely manner.
Critical Thinking
Problem-solving and critical thinking skills are paramount to software development as a whole. Developing this skill in particular, will have the greatest effect on how we as developers will be able to tackle complex issues, and to what extent we can think outside the box.
Empathy
Every fruitful interaction involes a basic level of empathy, the field of software engineering is in a unique position. Though a good amount of our work is done in isolation, most if not all of its outcomes directly impact society at large.
Adaptability
As developers we must use a model of continuous learning, to stay up to date with new features available to us in either new technologies, or what we currently use. It behooves us to do what’s best for the software, so that we can do what is best for our customers.
